Llano Grande Center
Located in the rural south Texas town of Elsa and approximately 15 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border, the Llano Grande Center is an education nonprofit organization that prepares youth for college by addressing three areas: (1) youth leadership development, (2) asset building and community research, and (3) civic engagement and advocacy. Students who work with the Center build their academic and other skills, as they become researchers, social advocates, and community builders. They participate in one or some of the following Llano Grande program initiatives: Digital Storytelling Workshop, Community-based Research, Public Forums, College Prep Trips, Leadership for Community Change, an Oral History Project, Teacher Training Workshops, School Leadership Seminars, and the Alumni Network. In the past the Llano Grande Center has also convened programs such as a Spanish Language Immersion Institution, a weekly PBS show, youth radio, community enterprise development, and regional college prep seminars.
